Sustainability Policy

At One Acre Wood, we are deeply committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Our goal is to minimize our environmental impact, support local ecosystems, and promote sustainable practices in all aspects of our operations. This policy outlines our efforts and initiatives to achieve these objectives.

1. Eco-Friendly Construction and Materials

  • Sustainable Foundations: We use screwpiles for our foundations to reduce ground disturbance and protect tree roots and wildlife habitats. This method minimizes the impact on the land and promotes long-term environmental health.
  • Local and Sustainable Sourcing: Our building materials are sourced locally and sustainably whenever possible. For instance, the sweet chestnut used in our construction is grown and sourced from the Forest of Dean, reducing transportation emissions and supporting local forestry practices.
  • Repurposing Materials: We repurpose and reuse materials creatively. For example, pallet wood from deliveries and offcuts from the build are used to create unique finishes. This reduces waste and adds character to our treehouses.
  • Eco-Friendly Insulation: We use sheep wool and recycled newspaper (cellulose) for insulation, providing effective thermal regulation while using renewable resources.
  • Bamboo Guttering: Our guttering systems are made from bamboo, which is sustainable and effective for rainwater harvesting. Collected rainwater is directed to feed trees and provide water for wildlife.

2. Wildlife and Habitat Conservation

  • Rewilding and Planting: We are dedicated to rewilding areas of our 18-acre property and planting trees and hedges to attract and support local wildlife. This includes creating meadows that support small mammals, wildflowers, and insects.
  • Bird and Bat Habitats: Our land supports a diverse range of birdlife, including wrens, swifts, buzzards, red kites, owls, and sparrow hawks. We also maintain bat flight paths and provide bat detectors for guests to observe these nocturnal creatures.
  • Nature Trails: We have established mown pathways through the meadows, allowing guests to explore and connect with nature. Laminated trail maps highlight points of interest and opportunities to engage with the environment.

3. Water and Waste Management

  • Rainwater Harvesting: We use bamboo guttering to harvest rainwater, which is then used to water trees and support wildlife, reducing our reliance on external water sources.
  • Recycling and Waste Reduction: We provide clear signage on recycling containers to encourage responsible waste management among guests. We also repurpose materials wherever possible to minimize waste.

4. Eco-Friendly Amenities

  • Natural Toiletries and Cleaning Products: We use natural, eco-friendly, and refillable toiletries and cleaning products, including compostable sponges. This reduces the environmental impact of single-use plastics and harsh chemicals.
  • Dark Sky Friendly Lighting: Our site is dark sky friendly, with minimal outdoor lighting that is directed downwards using warm LED bulbs. This protects nocturnal wildlife and allows guests to experience the natural beauty of the night sky. Guests are provided with lanterns to move about the site, further reducing light pollution.

5. Sustainable Partnerships and Practices

  • Local Collaborations: We work closely with local businesses and farms to promote sustainable practices and support the local economy. This includes partnering with a neighboring farm to graze sheep, which helps manage the land and provides guests with an authentic rural experience.
  • Seasonal and Local Welcome Baskets: Our "Taste of Herefordshire" welcome basket features local products such as Peter Cooks bread, Wicton Farm milk, Frank’s biscuits, and Skittery apple juice, supporting local producers and reducing food miles.

6. Continuous Improvement and Guest Engagement

  • Guest Education: We provide comprehensive information to guests about our sustainability practices and how they can contribute during their stay. This includes promoting responsible waste management, water conservation, and respect for wildlife.
  • Feedback and Improvement: We are committed to continuously improving our sustainability efforts and welcome feedback from guests to help us identify areas for enhancement.

At One Acre Wood, we believe that sustainable tourism is not only possible but essential. By integrating eco-friendly practices into every aspect of our operations, we aim to create a magical, responsible, and environmentally conscious experience for all our guests.

For more information about our sustainability practices or to provide feedback, please contact Sean & Annie. We are always here to engage with our guests and improve our efforts towards a more sustainable future.
